CLUB
SAVAGE / ELITE MIX CDs:
The first titled SESSION 5
(All Jacked Out). Is dedicated to the music that was
played at the legendary Club Savage/Elite. Club Savage
(later called Club Elite)
was located in the Chelsea section of New York City.
With its opening in the
1980’s it right away became one of the hottest clubs in the
country (even before
they received their liquor license). Before Mr. Leo
Collins (the owner) acquired
the club it used to be a popular recording studio called
Vanguard Studios, which recorded a number of popular hit
records in its day ("One More Shot", "Hip Hop
Be-Bop", "Thanks To You" to name a few). Mr. Leo
also previously employed
Don Welch & Larry D as resident DJ's at the famed
Club Collibron/2nd Floor,
who the Oscar winning actor Denzel Washington (who
was a patron) mentioned
on national television at a B.E.T. Award Show.
Savage/Elite quickly became well known for several reasons,
from its beautiful décor (leather chairs, carpeting,
velvet fabric, custom mirrors) to its staff, its
hospitality, to its state of the art
sound system designed by Alex Rosner, Don Welch &
Ricky Grant. Last but not
least the great music that resident DJ Don Welch
played for the patrons. Don
being a former Billboard Magazine Club reporter gave
him access to getting
and playing the hottest new music first, even before the
songs received radio
play. This brought out all types of music lovers including
celebrities, from Stevie Wonder to Prince,
Eddie Murphy to Chris Tucker, Bernie Mac
To Chris Rock, Mike Tyson to Evander
Holyfield, Bootsy Collins to The Wayan Brothers.
The club also featured many classic performances by
legendary acts such as
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Howard Hewitt,
Melissa Morgan, The Moments, The Main
Ingredient, Colonel Abrams, D-Train,
Loleatta
Holloway, GQ, Missy Elliott, Big Daddy
Kane, Groove Theory, Johnny
Kemp, Super Cat, Barbara Tucker, Robert Owens, Robin S &
Cebil Jeffries
to name a few. Since the closing of the club in the 1990’s
their still has not been
a club that equaled the passion and professionalism that
Savage/Elite showed its patrons. We would like to thank all
the patrons, promoters, performers and guest
DJ’s that made Club Savage/Elite the legend it has become.
So here’s a piece of
music history titled Session 5 (All Jacked Up).
